Tips and Advice for Drivers

Vehicle Maintenance Checklist

The attention given to vehicle maintenance ultimately affects the performance of the vehicle and how reliable a vehicle will be. There are different options available regarding routine maintenance. A vehicle retailer, an independent repair shop, or if you’re mechanically inclined, you can do the work yourself. However you go about it, getting routine maintenance performed on your vehicle is a wise step.

If you decide to maintain your vehicle, changing the oil and filter should be done on a routine basis. Oil will lose its effectiveness as it gets old. This means it loses its capability to suitably lubricate and coat the inner parts of your engine. If you check the oil level each or every other time you fuel it up you can better track the levels and thickness of the oil. If your oil level is low, it typically takes longer to pump the oil to the top of the engine to grease important engine mechanisms.

Other engine fluids like antifreeze, which serves several important functions, should also be maintained on a regular basis. Antifreeze protects a vehicle’s engine against cold temperatures, but it also protects against high temperature. Antifreeze keeps your vehicle running at a constant temperature which keeps your engine performing optimally. Antifreeze also plays a key part in your car’s heating system. When you turn your heater on, the hot antifreeze is pumped through a hose while a fan blows the heat from it towards you via your heater vents.

Be sure to check belts and hoses for cracks. Many automobiles have timing belts that need to be changed periodically, and since a broken timing belt can damage an entire engine, have this checked on a regular basis. A vehicle’s transmission should be checked regularly also. Most manufacturers recommend transmission service every 30,000 miles, this includes a fluid and filter change. Check the brakes on your vehicle because the last thing you want to have happen is to have the brake pads become too worn, you could potentially damage the brake rotors which is an expensive repair.

If you follow a checklist of regularly maintained engine components such as oil, antifreeze, other fluids, wires, plugs, belts, hoses, cables and the battery, you are giving yourself the confidence that your vehicle is running in top shape.
